The Romans
Class: Squirrels (Year 3)
Term:
Brilliant Beginning
Sparkling Starter
Fabulous Finish
The children will be
looking
at
Roman
numerals and how these
are used today in different
places within their homes
and the wider local area.
The children will start off the
topic looking at the myth of
Romulus and Remus and
how Rome was founded.
They
will
use
their
observational skills to identify
objects, and learn about the
past using artefacts from the
Priest House Museum.
We will share what we have
learnt about the Romans at
our Look and See in
December.
We will show the work we
have accomplished and give
our visitors a chance to work
with us to produce our own
mosaics.
Live, Love, Learn
Why?
This topic helps us to understand an important period of world history, focusing on what occurred in our own country at
this time and the impact this has had on our lives today.
British values
The children are aware of British values and these will be represented in our learning in the following ways;
Democracy - Children will look at the way Roman Emperors governed and how this contrasts with our own
democracy today.
The Rule of Law – Children will see how law and order was maintained in Roman Britain and compare this to today.
Individual Liberty - Children will see how Roman citizens and those that they conquered did not always have
individual liberty and think about why our individual liberty is so important.
Mutual respect - Children will share their ideas during lessons, showing respect to each other at all times.
Tolerance – Children will see how the Romans were not always tolerant of others and the impact this had.
Rights Respecting Schools
As a Right’s Respecting School we will consider the following rights in this topic;
Article 17: Every child has a right to access correct information
Article 28: Every child has the right to a good education
We will look at mosaics
and
how
they
were
produced in the Roman
era. We will consider
Roman armour and create
our own record of this
through a range of art and
craft activities. We will
consider the significance of
Roman designs and reflect
this in our own design
work.
We will study the myth of Romulus and Remus and the founding of Rome. We will use the story to provide inspiration for the

planning and writing of our own myth to explain the founding of Alderholt!
We will be considering the features of letters and why they are written. We will compare the use of formal and informal styles,
and the associated layout and vocabulary. We will explore letter writing both in role as a Roman soldier, and writing for modern
day purposes.
We will learn about play scripts through our Christmas performance, and practice reading aloud with a sense of audience.
We will try to improve our sentence structure, exploring both the use of conjunctions and vocabulary choices.
We will continue to investigate spelling patterns, refine our use of punctuation and practice our joined handwriting.
Geography
Maths
As geographers, we will use
atlases to locate Italy and
Rome. We will observe how
the Roman Empire evolved
using an interactive map.
History
As historians we will learn about the
story of how Rome was founded. We
will have hands-on experiences with
Roman artefacts, and use our
archaeology
skills
to
make
suggestions.
We will discuss how
Britain was affected by the Roman
invasion and the impact it had on our
lives today. We will find out how
Boudicca led the rebellion against them
As mathematicians, we will be considering our mental and written methods using our
new Inspire Maths Scheme.
We will show calculations pictorially using the part-part-whole model. We will refine our
ideas of place value by partitioning numbers and regrouping.
Music
RE
We will use the Bar Model method to convey addition and subtraction problems in a
clear and precise way. We will use this to enable us to complete word problems, and
write answers using correct mathematical vocabulary.
We will be learning the skills

PE
In RE we will look at
symbols of Christianity
focusing on the story of
the Nativity and what
Christmas means to us.
Science
As scientists we will be learning
about Health and Growth. We
will discuss the purpose of our
skeleton and how our muscles
help us to move. We will find
out about, and sort vertebrates
and invertebrates.
We will learn about food groups
and the health benefits for our
body. We will consider what
contributes to a healthy lifestyle.
