Prerequisite Enforcement
Chemistry and Math prerequisites at East Los Angeles College are electronically
enforced. Participation in the Chemistry 101 Readiness Exam will recommend
the appropriate chemistry course; however the math prerequisites will also need
to be cleared via appropriate satisfactory math course completion or acceptable
level of skill as demonstrated in the Mathematics Assessment Placement
Process. Below are the respective recommended Chemistry courses and their
prerequisites.
CHEMISTRY 065 - Introductory General Chemistry
Math Prerequisite: Satisfactory completion of Math 115 -or- placement into
Math 125 or higher, as demonstrated in the Math Assessment Placement
Process.

Chemistry Course Recommendation
The Chemistry 101 Readiness Exam acquaints students to the skills that are
needed to succeed in the general chemistry series and serves to identify those
students who are academically prepared for Chemistry 101. Some students
however, will need to improve their knowledge and will be recommended to
register for Chemistry 065.
NOTE: Chemistry Department advises Chemistry 101 Readiness Exam results
are valid for a one year period.

Sample Tests:
Each student should review the following Chemistry 101 Readiness Exam
sample test materials, as provided, for preparation prior to taking the exam.
Exam Selection/ Calendar Review:
The Chemistry 101 Readiness Exam is offered on a First-Come, First-Serve
basis only. Space is limited to the first 30 students at the Main-Campus and 50
students at South Gate Educational Center. Review the Chemistry 101
Readiness Exam Calendar and attend a scheduled date & time of choice.
Students are encouraged to arrive at least a half-hour prior to any scheduled
exam.
Date of Exam:
Plan on arriving at least a half-hour early, to the exam of choice. Main Campus
exams are held in Building F5, Room 106. South Gate Educational Center
exams are held in Room 120. You must remember to bring to the exam: proof
of Student I.D. Number, Photo I.D., two #2 pencils, a non-programmable
calculator and the issued Chemistry 101 Readiness Exam Calendar. Students
will have access to a Periodic Table during the exam. Students will be turned
away upon achieving capacity, late arrivals, and/or if the necessary documents
are not provided. (Programmable calculators will not be permitted during the
exam.)

Chemistry:
Chemistry 101 Readiness Exam is a 45-minute exam. It consists of 44
questions based on high school chemistry and high school mathematics
including: elements and their properties, chemical formulas,
concentrations of solutions, gases, oxidation numbers, redox reactions,
and the concepts of acids and bases.
