Fraction
A fraction is a comparison of a part of something to its whole.
The numerator is the number of equal parts being considered.
The denominator is the number of equal parts in the whole.
Types of Fractions
Proper fractions: The numerator is less than denominator. (Proper
fractions are less than 1.)
Improper fractions: The numerator is greater than or equal to the
denominator. (Improper fractions are greater than or equal to 1)
Mixed numbers: They are the sum of a whole number and a fraction.
Rule
Improper Fractions → Mixed Numbers
Use division to rewrite the fraction:
𝑅
𝐷 𝑁 = 𝑄𝐷
Quotient = whole number
Remainder = numerator
Denominator does not change
Example
Convert the following mixed number to an equivalent improper
fraction:
2
7
1
= 23
3
3 7
-6
1
𝟕
𝟑
𝐷 𝑁
=𝑄
𝑅
𝐷
Quotient = whole number = 2
Remainder = numerator = 1
Denominator does not change = 3
A visual representation of the equivalent fractions is shown below:
