THYROID DISORDERS – DEFINITION
The thyroid gland is the biggest gland in the neck. The sole function of the thyroid is to make thyroid hormones.
The hormones have an effect on nearly all tissues of the body where it increases cell activity. This means the sole
function of the thyroid is to regulate the body’s metabolism.

There are two main types :
Hypothyroidism – means a reduced level of thyroid hormone in the body. This can cause various symptoms, the most common
being: tiredness, weight gain, constipation, aches, dry skin, lifeless hair and feeling cold. Treatment is usually easy by taking a
tablet each day to replace the missing hormone. Treatment usually works well and symptoms usually go.

Hyperthyroidism – means a raised level of thyroid hormone for which there are various causes. This can cause various
symptoms, the most common being: restlessness, tremor, weight loss, eye problems and palpitations. Treatment is usually
effective. Treatment options to reduce the hormone level include: medicines, radioiodine and surgery. Long-term follow-up is
important, even after successful treatment.

Hypothyroidism is more common in women and affects 15 in every 1,000 women and one in 1,000 men in the UK.
Hypothyroidism also tends to run in families.
Hyperthyroidism affects women 10 times more often than men, and is most common in people aged 20-40.
