THE NERVOUS SYSTEM: ITS MAJOR DIVISIONS SUBMITTED BY: DR. KULDIP KAUR DEPTT. OF PSYCHOLOGY G.C.G., SECTOR-11 C, CHANDIGARH NERVOUS SYSTEM The complete network of neurons that regulates bodily processes and is ultimately responsible for all aspects of conscious experience. DIVISIONS OF NERVOUS SYSTEM Nervous system is divided into two parts: CENTRAL NERVOUS SYSTEM PERIPHERAL NERVOUS SYSTEM CENTRAL NERVOUS SYSTEM Central nervous system occupies the central position in the body. Central Nervous System is divided into two parts: 1. BRAIN 2. SPINAL CORD 1. BRAIN: Brain interprets and stores information and sends orders to muscles, glands and organs. Brain is divided into: a). Fore Brain b). Mid Brain c). Hind brain 2. SPINAL CORD: Spinal cord is the pathway connecting brain and the Peripheral Nervous System. PERIPHERAL NERVOUS SYSTEM The portion of the nervous system that connects internal organs, glands and voluntary and involuntary muscles to the Central Nervous System. Peripheral Nervous System is divided into two parts: A. SOMATIC NERVOUS SYSTEM B. AUTONOMIC NERVOUS SYSTEM A. Somatic Nervous System: The portion of the peripheral nervous system that connects the brain and the spinal cord (central nervous system) to voluntary muscles. Somatic Nervous System is divided into: a). Cranial nerves b). Spinal nerves B. Autonomic Nervous System: The portion of the Peripheral Nervous System that connects the brain and spinal cord (central nervous system) to internal organs, glands and involuntary muscles. Autonomic Nervous System is divided into: a). Sympathetic Autonomic Nervous System b). Parasympathetic Autonomic Nervous System
