Forms of Energy and Energy Transformations

Energy has a number of different forms it can be in
o We are made of energy…Big Bang

Forms of Energy
o Mechanical Energy (motion of objects)
 Kinetic
 Potential
o Thermal Energy (heat)
o Chemical Energy (food, plants, fossil fuels,
bombs)
o Electrical Energy (energy of moving electrons)
 Mechanical energy is usually converted to
electrical energy using a generator
o Electromagnetic Energy
 Energy from Sun created by fusion…form
from moving ions
o Sound Energy
o Nuclear Energy
 Fusion of hydrogen inside sun creates
electromagnetic energy
 Fission inside nuclear power plants

Law of Conservation of Energy (LoCoE):
Energy cannot be created or destroyed, it can
only be changed from one form of energy to
another
o The amount of energy (in joules) always remains the
same
o However energy can transform into other forms
o These are called energy transformations
Examples:
•
•
•
•
•
Burning coal – chemical to Heat and Light
Phosphorescence (firefly) – chemical to Light
Playing a violin – mechanical to Sound
Turning on a lamp – electrical to Light and Heat
Sun emitting energy- nuclear to electromagnetic

7. So if 50 J of electrical energy were put in and 14 J were lost
to heat energy how many joules of light energy would there be?
8. Two hockey players run into each other on the ice. The total amount
of energy before the collision compared to after the collision is:
What is the name of this law?
