 Great wealth was generated in Northern Italy through trade and manufacturing
 Italians spent their money on art and they also used their money to promote
education
 Roman influence was all around Italy
Why was Florence an important city-state during the Renaissance?
 It was the “cradle” of the Renaissance…where the most important artists and
thinkers lived and worked.

 Someone that financially supports and artist
What was the importance of the Medici family to the Renaissance?
 Powerful banking family
 financially supported many artists and scholars

What is a fresco?
 Watercolor painting done on wet plaster
What is Humanism?
 Philosophy of the Renaissance
 Focused on individual achievement
 Had a positive view of Humanity
 Valued being “well rounded”---knowing a lot about many different subjects
 Looked back to the ancient Greeks and Romans for inspiration…believed these
ancient cultures were better than European culture at the time

 Invented by Johann Gutenberg in mid 1400s
 Used moveable type (letters on metal pieces/stamps)
 Pressed paper to the organized pieces of type (which had ink rolled on them)
 Could copy 500 books in the same amount of time it took to copy one book by
hand
 Ideas were able to spread faster
 Education increased (especially in cities) because more books were now available
Why did the new middle class of the Renaissance promote education? Why did middle
class people need education?
 Running a business requires basic skills of reading, writing, and mathematics
 Being educated now meant “moving up” in society
What does the word “vernacular” mean? How is this term related to the invention of the

 Vernacular means someone’s native language
 Related to the printing press because more books were now produced in people’s
vernacular in the Renaissance
