OA2.1 Understand energy and its
conservation
OA2.1.1: Identify forms of energy:
Light energy, heat energy, chemical
energy, nuclear energy, wind energy
What is energy?
The ability to do work. Energy causes things around
us to happen.
Yesterday, we talked about some different
forms of energy: potential, kinetic, mechanical
and electrical.
Remember???
Potential energy
(stored)
Kinetic energy
(movement)
Mechanical energy
(engines)
Electrical energy
(electrons)
Word
1. Light
energy
Definition
Energy in the form of moving waves
of light (also know as solar energy)
The sun has lots of
light energy
Word
2. Heat
energy
Definition
Energy in the form of moving molecules
Hot objects = more heat energy = molecules
moving faster
The fire has lots of
heat energy
Word
Definition
3. Chemical Energy stored in molecules
energy
It is stored in food, fuels and batteries, and
is released as other forms of energy during
chemical reactions.
The gasoline has lots of
chemical energy, so does
food!
Fossil fuels are a type
of chemical energy
Word
4. Nuclear
energy
Definition
Energy stored in the nucleus of an atom
Energy is released when nucleus is broken
apart = nuclear fission
Nuclear fission takes place
in nuclear power plants to
make electricity.
Nuclear Fission
• Fission means “to divide”
• Remember that fission
has 2 s’s, therefore it
splits into TWO parts.

Word
5. Wind
energy
Definition
Energy created by the movement of the
wind
Wind is moving air due to temperature
differences on Earth
Turbine use wind energy used
to create electricity
How Uneven Heating of Water and Land
Causes Wind
