ORGANISM CLASSIFICATION How do you classify life? WHAT IS LIFE? WHAT VARIETIES ARE THERE? Classifying life is often referred to as taxonomy. Taxonomy- The science of defining groups of biological organisms on the basis of shared characteristics and giving names to those groups. HOW BIOLOGISTS CLASSIFY LIFE Organisms are grouped by similarities that they share with other organisms. This makes identifying an organism easier. It also adds logic to naming a newly discovered organism. A new organism will share parts of its name with other organisms that it share similarities with. WHY USE TAXONOMY? All names are in Latin. This is done to make the names standardized, so everyone in the world knows and understands them. There are different levels of names in taxonomy, so an organism as ordinary as a cat actually has a very long classification. House Cat- Eukarya Animalia Chordata Mammalia Carnivora Felidae Felis Catus Scientific Name- Felis Catus SOME TAXONOMY FACTS Domain Kingdom Phylum Class Order Family Genus Species Just remember: Dear King Phillip, Come Out For Goodness Sake! WHAT ARE THE TAXONOMY LEVELS? Domain: group organisms by characteristics like cell structure and chemistry. There are 3 domains: Bacteria Archaea Eukarya DOMAIN Kingdom- Classify organisms based on the developmental characteristics and nutritional strategy. The Kingdoms for each domain are shown. KINGDOM Domain Kingdom Bacteria Eubacteria Archaea Archaeabacteria Eukarya Plante Animalia Fungi Protista Phylum- separate organisms based on key characteristics that define the major groups within the kingdom. Class- separate organisms based on key characteristics that define the major groups within the phylum. Order- group organisms based on key characteristics that define the major groups within the class. Family- classify organisms based on key characteristics that define the major groups within the order. PHYLUM, CLASS, ORDER, AND FAMILY Genus- separate organisms based on key characteristics that define major groups within the family. Used in the scientific name. The name is listed first with the first latter capitalized and the name italicized. Species- The most specific naming. This is determined by whether or not the organism can successfully reproduce with each other and create a viable offspring. Used in the scientific name. The name is listed last with the name all lower case and italicized. GENUS AND SPECIES EXAMPLE EXAMPLE EXAMPLE
