European Imperialism in Africa and Asia–Then and Now – H. Waters WH10 Guiding/Essay Questions To what extent do the issues in Africa &Asia in the 20th & 21st centuries owe their origins to European Imperialism? What were the positive and negative effects for both sides involved in Imperialism? Part 1. Brainstorm together – What issues do African and Asian countries face today? Why is that? Why do you think that is? Define social Darwinism- Do you see evidence of it in Imperialism Define the concept of White Man’s Burden in your own words? Part 2 Complete Individual assessments and complete the group activity of your choice. (See guiding question/tip sheet.) You will receive several individual grades as well as a group grade for the final project. Final Project- Student/Group Choice Group/PairStep One- A. Select your country/countries. Each group will select a country and region and examine the issues facing that region/country as a result of European Imperialism during the Age of Imperialism. (all are located in Asia and Africa) B. Gather notes on a google doc using the template provided. C. Be certain to color code the information you get from each source. That means notes from each source are a different color. When I look through all of your notes I know which came from the green sources, purple etc. That color matches the correctly cited MLA source in your bibliography. Who are some key people/players on each side of the Imperializing of this country/region? When, if ever, does this country/region gain its independence? How does that happen? When you examine this country/region in modern times (1950-2010), what problems do you see it dealing with as a result of Imperialism? 10.
