Energy Study Guide
1. What is the difference between a series circuit and a parallel circuit?
a. A series uses the same path for more than one load(light) whereas a parallel circuit uses
multiple paths for multiple loads(lights)
2. What is the purpose of a switch?
a. To open or close the circuit, stop/start the flow of electric current
3. What does the “law of Conservation of Energy” say?
a. Energy cannot be created or destroyed, it can only be changed.
4. Explain Potential and Kinetic Energy.
a. List the three different types of potential energy.
i. Gravitational
ii. Elastic
iii. chemical
b. List the five different types of kinetic energy.
i. Motion
ii. Sound
iii. Light
iv. Electric
v. Thermal
5. What is conduction- when 2 objects collide/touch transferring heat
a. Ex.- pot on the stove, ice cube in your hand
6. What is convection-when heat is transferred through liquids or gases
a. Ex. – weather in the atmosphere
7. What is radiation- transferring of heat through waves
a. Ex. – sun, microwave
8. Energy of moving particles that produces heat is?
a. Thermal Energy
9. Energy contained in the bonds that hold the protons and neutrons of an atom together is?
a. Nuclear Energy
10. Energy from the movement of electric charges from one place to another is?
a. Electric Energy
11. The form of potential energy stored in reactants(parts of a chemical reaction) is?
a. Chemical Energy
12. What is nuclear fission?
a. The splitting of nuclei to produce energy
13. What is nuclear fusion?
a. The fusing of nuclei to produce energy
14. The transfer of thermal energy is known as?
a. heat
15. What does a prism show us and how?
a. The wavelengths of light that can be seen by the human eye, by separating/refracting white
light`
16. How do we see color or why? Explain.
a. Different wavelengths of light can be seen by the eye once they bounce off of an object
17. Why does light appear to be reversed when it travels through a small opening such as your eye?
a. Light travels in a straight line, so when it passes through a small opening it appears
backwards or reversed on the other side.
18. Why do we hear very high sounds compared very low sounds?
a. Pitch, the more frequent the wavelengths the higher the pitch the less frequent the lower
the pitch.
19. What are the two forms of waves? Which form is sound and which form is light?
a. Longitudinal- sound
b. Transverse- light
20. What is wavelength? What is amplitude of a wave?
a. Wavelength- the distance from one crest to the next crest
b. Amplitude- the height of a wave from its resting position to the top of the crest.
21. Light waves are made up of electric and magnetic energy.
22. What is a calorie and what measures calories?
a. How much energy it takes to raise one gram of water one degree Celsius, calorimeter
23. What are the three parts of a circuit? Give an example of each.
a. Power source, battery
b. path, wire
c. load, light
24. Energy from a battery is stored as chemical energy and is converted to electric energy.
