Islam- is the religion Muslim- is a follower of Islam
Allah-Al (The God)
Sharia- Muslim law Shia- followers of Ali
Mosque-Muslim place of worship
Caliph –successor
Sunni-the Way Mecca- holiest city in the Muslim religion
Islam is one of the largest populated religions
Muhammad – the last prophet
Koran- holy book of Islam
Sunnis and Shias are two different denominations of Muslims.
Sunni-any leader who proved himself should be the leader
Shia- ancestors of Muhammad in particular Ali, who was his Son-in-Law
Majority of Muslims are Sunni making about 85%-90% the rest are Shia about
10%-15%
Mecca- a popular sport for trading- people visit Mecca to visit the Ka’aba- the
large black building in town
Chronological Order of Events:
Muhammad works as a merchant and caravan operator in Mecca
Angel Gabriel-appears to Muhammad and tells him he is the last prophet of the
monotheistic God, which Muslims will call Allah
Muhammad is not welcomed in Mecca –people afraid he will turn people away
Goes to Medina where he is offered leadership –called Great Migration
After Muhammad dies The Righlty Guided Caliphs take over. All caliphs that are
connected to Muhammad (friends/family). They lead Islam and spread it, mostly
through conquering other lands
Ali- the last of the four Rightly Guided Caliphs is killed
Holy Cities-Mecca, Medina, Jerusalem
Contributions of IslamAlgebra, Art, Chemistry, Pharmacy, Travel, Food
5 Pillars
Hajj-a pilgrimage (visit) to Mecca
Shawm- fast during the Islamic month of Ramadan (may eat while it is dark out,
but not during the day)
Zakah-regular payment to charity 2.5% per year
Shadahah-there is no God but Allah, and Muhammad is his prophet
Salah-must pray five times a day facing Mecca
Traditions of Islam-no depictions of Muhammad/Allah
-many things banned –alcohol, pork, tattoos
-no inappropriate mixing of genders; clothing
Host/guests- guest must drink/eat if offered; must leave a little food otherwise
they feel they didn’t give you enough
-must ask about entire family, cannot ask about one person=too personal
-things that are not human cannot have the name Muhammad
-fasting
