How do plants grow in a garden?

need four things to grow.
Plants need –

Air

Water
•
Soil

7
Air
Plants need air to grow.
They get the air they need
through little holes
in their leaves.
These holes are called pores.
If you put a plant
in a place with no air
it will die.
Plants breathe air through
pores in their leaves.

Sunlight
Plants need sunlight to grow.
When the sun shines on a plant,
the plant’s leaves trap energy
from the sunlight.
They use the sunlight
to make their food.
They use the food
to help them grow.
If you put a plant
in a place with no sunlight,
it cannot make food.
It will die.
10
These flowers use sunlight
to grow.

Water
These boys are
watering the garden.
Plants need water
so they can grow.
Plants get water when it rains.
They get water
when someone waters them.
Plants suck up the water in soil.
They suck it up with their roots.
The water goes from the roots
through the stem
to the leaves.
Plants will die without water.
12
13
Soil
Plants need soil to grow.
Plants get water from soil.
But plants need more
than just water to grow.
Plants get food from the soil.
This food is called nutrients.
If a plant cannot get the nutrients
it needs, it will not grow well.
It may die.
