February 1861 The Confederate States of America is formed with Jefferson Davis, a West Point graduate and former U.S. Army officer, as president. For the duration of the war the blockade limits the ability of the rural South to stay well supplied in its war against the industrialized North. Lincoln makes the Emancipation Proclamation which states slaves are free in rebelling states giving purpose to the war. March 3, 1863 - The U.S. Congress enacts a draft, affecting male citizens aged 20 to 45, but also exempts those who pay $300 or provide a substitute. "The blood of a poor man is as precious as that of the wealthy," poor Northerners complain. Sabine Pass is defended by the Confederacy under Richard Dowling and the Davis Guards preventing a Union invasion headed for Houston September 1863 Gettysburg address November 1863 April 1865 Appomattox Courthouse The war is over General Lee surrenders to Union General Grant! May 1865 Palmetto Ranch, a month after Lee surrenders to Grant was fought near Brownsville Texas and won by the Confederacy. 13th amendment is written and passed-Slaves are free in United States! Proposed by Congress February 1865 /Ratified December 6, 1865 Lincoln is assassinated in Ford’s Theater. Andrew Johnson becomes President.
