Abraham Lincoln is elected
President. November 1860
Abraham Lincoln, who had declared "Government cannot
endure permanently half slave, half free..." is elected president,
the first Republican, receiving 180 of 303 possible electoral
votes and 40 percent of the popular vote.
Secession December

Southern states start seceding from
the United States led by South
Carolina.
South Carolina secedes from the Union.
Followed within two months by
Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, Georgia,
Louisiana and Texas.
Texas joins the Confederacy!

The Confederate States of America is formed with Jefferson Davis, a
West Point graduate and former U.S. Army officer, as president.

President Lincoln issues a Proclamation of Blockade
against Southern ports. For the duration of the war the
blockade limits the ability of the rural South to stay well
supplied in its war against the industrialized North.

Galveston is under the control of the Union
until the morning of January 1 when
Confederate leader John B. Magruder takes
steamboats line with cotton into Galveston
Harbor and attacks Union ships!

Emancipation Proclamation
January 1863
President Lincoln issues the final Emancipation
Proclamation freeing all slaves in territories held by
Confederates and emphasizes the enlisting of black soldiers
in the Union Army. The war to preserve the Union now
becomes a revolutionary struggle for the abolition of
slavery.
Lincoln makes the Emancipation Proclamation which
states slaves are free in rebelling states giving
purpose to the war.
March 3, 1863 - The U.S. Congress
enacts a draft, affecting male citizens
aged 20 to 45, but also exempts those
who pay $300 or provide a substitute.
"The blood of a poor man is as
precious as that of the wealthy," poor
Northerners complain.

Confederacy under Richard Dowling
and the Davis Guards preventing a
Union invasion headed for Houston

Lincoln is assassinated in Ford’s
Theater. Andrew Johnson becomes
President. April 1865
Congress passes the 14th amendmentCitizenship for former slaves. July 1868
