WHAT IS SUDDEN CARDIAC ARREST? Sudden Cardiac Arrest is NOT a heart attack. A heart attack occurs when a blood vessel becomes blocked and interrupts blood flow to the heart, causing heart muscle to die. Sudden cardiac arrest occurs when the heart's electrical system malfunctions and the heart stops beating. Most of these deaths occur with little or no warning, from a syndrome called sudden cardiac arrest. The most common cause of sudden cardiac arrest is a disturbance in the heart rhythm called ventricular fibrillation SUDDEN CARDIAC ARREST FACTS Sudden cardiac death accounts for 19% of sudden deaths in children between 1 and 13 years of age and 30% between 14 and 21 years of age Sudden Cardiac Arrest is a leading cause of death in the United States, claiming an estimated 325,000 lives each year. SCA claims a life every two minutes or 1,000 lives every day 7,000 – 10,000 children die each year from Sudden Cardiac Arrest. 95% of Sudden Cardiac Arrest victims die before reaching the hospital. Only 27.4% of SCA victims receive bystander CPR. It is estimated that about 95% of sudden cardiac arrest victims do not survive. SCA affects 1 to 2 children per 100,000 each year.
