TYPES OF SPEECHES: Political: a speech about an issue relating to government or politics.(example: Ben Franklin, Patrick Henry, and Thomas Paine.) Address: a formal speech that honors an occasion or the speaker. (example: Ab Lincoln or any presidential address) Sermon: a speech that is usually based on a scriptural text and is intended to provide religious or moral instruction. *Many speeches are examples of persuasion (speech or writing that tries to get the audience to think or act in a certain way PERSUASIVE TECHNIQUES: Logical appeal: a well-reasoned argument (with evidence, facts, etc.) Emotional appeal: “hits” the audience’s feelings Ethical appeal: directed at the audience’s sense of morality or values. In order to have an effective speech, there are certain devices one should include. Repetition: restating an idea using the same words. Restatement: Expressing the same idea in different words. Parallelism: Repeating a grammatical structure. Antithesis: Using strong contrasting words, images, or ideas. Rhetorical question: Asking questions with obvious answers.
