SPEECHES: A NONFICTION WORK THAT IS DELIVERED
ORALLY TO AN AUDIENCE.


TYPES OF SPEECHES:

Political: a speech about an issue relating to government or
politics.(example: Ben Franklin, Patrick Henry, and Thomas
Paine.)

Address: a formal speech that honors an occasion or the speaker.
(example: Ab Lincoln or any presidential address)

Sermon: a speech that is usually based on a scriptural text and is
intended to provide religious or moral instruction.
*Many speeches are examples of persuasion (speech or
writing that tries to get the audience to think or act in a
certain way
PERSUASIVE TECHNIQUES:



Logical appeal: a well-reasoned argument (with evidence,
facts, etc.)
Emotional appeal: “hits” the audience’s feelings
Ethical appeal: directed at the audience’s sense of morality or
values.
In order to have an effective speech, there
are certain devices one should include.

Repetition: restating an idea using the same words.

Restatement: Expressing the same idea in different words.

Parallelism: Repeating a grammatical structure.

Antithesis: Using strong contrasting words, images, or ideas.

Rhetorical question: Asking questions with obvious answers.
