TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 12TH Why is this region of the world called Latin America? Name at least 8 countries that comprise this region. AFTER TODAY… Students will introduced to the unifying characteristics of Latin America. Students will be able to locate the countries of Latin America. Students will make the connection between geography and culture. LATIN AMERICA LOCATION: The region of Latin America stretches from Mexico in the Northern Hemisphere to Argentina in the Southern Hemisphere. MAP IT… All the countries of Central & South America. All the Capital cities of Central & South America The Pacific Ocean The Atlantic Ocean The Caribbean Sea The Gulf of Mexico The Panama Canal The Pampas The Amazon River The Amazon Rain Forest The Strait of Magellan The Andes Mountains The Brazilian Highlands Atacama Desert 5 MINUTE EXERCISE… Pick any ONE of the BOLDfaced Subtopics from the Environmental Geography section from pages 134-137. Read your section ONLY. Create a diary entry or a drawing showing HOW someone who lives in this area would go about their daily life. From the Quechua Indian language it literally means “plains”. Gauchos are Argentinean cowboys who herd cattle. LATIN AMERICA The region of Latin America is defined by the influence of Spanish & Portuguese culture (Imperialism). Latin is the root of both the Spanish & Portuguese languages. In addition to language, the region is heavily influenced by the Roman Catholic religion. RACIAL & CULTURAL DIVERSITY BRAZIL REVEALED MIXTURE AFRICAN – Slave Trade EUROPEAN - Imperialism NATIVE – Indigenous People MESTIZO – mix of European & Indigenous DIFFUSION Diffusion is the spread of culture. Positive example may be trade / Negative example may be war or the slave trade. Diffusion is happening faster as a result of globalization. Is this GOOD or BAD?
