WHICH IS NOT A MAJOR FUNCTION OF THE CIRCULATORY SYSTEM? A) DELIVERING OXYGEN AND NUTRIENTS TO CELLS B) CARRYING CARBON DIOXIDE AWAY FROM CELLS C) REMOVING SOLID WASTE FROM THE BODY D) PUMPING BLOOD THROUGHOUT THE BODY *MAKE SURE YOU START A NEW SHEET IN YOUR JOURNAL. TITLE IT-”BELLWORK WEEK OF 11/1411/18” Bellwork 11-14-16 Bellwork Review • A) not the answer; the circulatory picks up nutrients from your small intestine and carries it to your cells. • B) not the answer; the circulatory system picks up carbon dioxide from the cells and drops it off in the lungs to be exhaled, and also picks up oxygen to take to the cells. • C)correct answer; the digestive system and urinary systems remove solid wastes from the body. The digestive system removes any left over food, and the urinary system (also called excretory system-think "exit") filters out waste with your kidneys. • D)not the answer; the circulatory system pumps blood throughout the body with the heart. • Objectives • Students will be able to analyze how plant and animal cells are organized to carry on the processes of life. • SPI 7.1.3 Explain the basic functions of a major organ system. • Success Criteria: I can describe the function of the digestive system. I can explain how they work with other systems. BrainPop • Digestive System Digestive Demonstration • Take a big bite of the cracker and chew on it for a few minutes. • The cracker will taste bland at first, but raise your hand when you start to taste a sweet flavor. • Digestion starts in the mouth with enzymes that break down carbohydrates into simple sugar. Does anyone know the name of this enzyme? #? • The TOC The Digestive System pg.? digestive system is a group of organs that work together to digest food so that is can be used by the body. • The digestive system is a series of tubelike organs called the digestive tract. • The Digestive Tract Organs: • Mouth, pharynx, esophagus, stomach, small intestine, large intestine, rectum, anus • The liver, gall bladder, pancreas, and salivary glands are also part of this system, but food does not pass through them. • Digestion • Two types of digestion: • The breaking, crushing, and mashing of food is called mechanical digestion. • In chemical digestion, large molecules are broken down into nutrients. Steps of Digestion • Steps of the Digestion: • Mouth • • Teeth- chewing (mechanical digestion) Saliva- contains an enzyme that begins chemical digestion of carbohydrates; changes complex carbohydrates (starches) into simple sugars (glucose). • Esophagus- sends food to stomach • Stomach- breaks down food into a liquid (chyme) by the action of muscle contraction (mechanical), enzymes, and acids (chemical). • Pancreas- lies behind the stomach and makes digestive enzymes and hormones that regulate sugar levels. • Small Intestine- the organ between the stomach and large intestine where most of the break down of food happens (chemical) and most of the nutrients from food are absorbed by villi. • Liver- Makes bile to break up fat. Stores nutrients. Breaks down toxins. • Gall bladder- stores bile produced by the liver • Large intestine- removes water from mostly digested food and turns waste into semisolid feces (poop). • Rectum- stores feces until it leaves the anus. The inside of a real digestive system! • Part One • Part Two HBS Chart- Digestion • Function: The digestive system breaks down the food you eat into nutrients that your body can absorb. • Major Organs: esophagus, stomach, intestines, liver • How it works with other systems: The circulatory system absorbs nutrients from the small intestines to carry to the body cells. Digestive Menu • Appetizer (Everyone Shares) • List the functions of the digestive system. • Entree (Pick One) • Write a one page story as if you are a piece of food travelling through the digestive system and describe your journey. • Draw a picture of the digestive system and label the following organs: mouth, esophagus, stomach, liver, small intestine, large intestine. Exit Ticket- answer and post on the closet door Which two organ systems work together to get nutrients to body cells? A) circulatory and digestive B) circulatory and respiratory C) digestive and immune D) excretory and digestive
