(Anything else should be underneath your desk) For a song length, you will walk around the room viewing your peers posters. Take note of what you like or the Propaganda techniques you noticed. Wednesday, February 17, 2016 Grammar Handout Objectives SWBAT Define the rhetorical appeals ethos, pathos, and logos. SWBAT Identify ethos, pathos, and logos. SWBAT Create a short piece of writing using one of the following: ethos, pathos, or logos. RHETORICAL APPEALS The media and authors convince and persuade people to have the same opinions as them. When you read or listen to an argument, determine what type of persuasive argument is being used: Logos, Pathos Ethos, or The rhetorical appeals are the three elements to the art of persuasion as defined by Aristotle. LOGOS Appeals to logic (The Mind) Uses definitions, analogies, factual data, statistics, and quotations Structure and layout Repetition of words, phrases, or ideas Uses citations from experts and authorities Denotative meanings/reasons Causes a cognitive, rational response FAVORED IN ACADEMIC SETTING ETHOS Appeals to values and ethics (Right and wrong) Language appropriate to audience and subject Asks questions of right and wrong Credibility based on speaker’s position or title Presents author or speaker as being reliable and respectful of audience Asks audience to make a value judgment OFTEN USED IN LAW PATHOS Appeals to emotions Vivid, concrete language Emotionally loaded language Emotional, personal examples Figurative language Evokes an emotional response MOST POWERFUL APPEAL Why I should have an extra hour past curfew: Identify the type of appeal “Haven’t I always been trustworthy?” Puppy-dog eyes “Studies show that teens whose parents trust them have higher self esteem.” More Practice Watch the video clip to gain more practice identifying each appeal. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wc1TrKIzAJM Group Practice Each group will receive a speech, in the speech identify the appeal(s).
