The Russian Revolution
Ms. Moran
SWBAT: Identify and analyze the causes of the
Russian Revolution by completing a graphic
organizer on the Russian Revolution of 1917.
Political Causes:
(1) weak, ineffective Czar, (2) Spread of Marxist/ communist
ideas
Social Causes:
(1) Gap between rich & poor, (2) Peasant’s desire for
land, (3) Deaths from WWI
Economic Causes:
(1) food & fuel shortages [WWI], (2) striking workers,
(3) terrible transportation system

• Czars had total control
• Czars needed to keep the rich happy to
maintain power how do you think they did
this?

• Serfs were treated similar to slaves

Events Leading to Revolution
1) Russo-Japanese War (1904-05)

Russia.
•Russians lost
confidence in
the Czar
Bloody Sunday
• Czarist troops fired on a peaceful demonstration of
workers in St Petersburg.
• When news of one hundred dead and hundreds more
wounded broke, everyone turned against the Czar
Russia in World War I
• Men lacked food,
weapons and supplies
• Czar Nicholas II went to
the front lines to help
the troops,
• The Czar was
incompetent on the
battlefront.
Rasputin
• Self-proclaimed “Holy
man” (Mad Monk)
• He eased the suffering
of Alexandra’s
hemophiliac son
• Had too much political
influence
• Rasputin was killed by
Russian nobles who
feared the loss of the
monarchy.

• Vladimir Lenin believed in
a communist revolution
• Lenin and the Bolsheviks
promised the people
“Peace, Land, and Bread.”
• Lenin was able to unite
the workers in revolution
and drive the temporary
government out.

the Imperial Family

last remains of the Czarist
Russian system in 1921,
transformed Russia into
the United Soviet State of
Russia (USSR).
