How is the Periodic Table organized?
• By atomic number, the number of
protons
• In columns called groups or families
– The family names are given
• In rows called periods
– The table shows seven different periods
Periodic Law
• With the elements arranged by
atomic number, their chemical and
physical properties are found to show
a repeating, or periodic, pattern.
• Elements within a family have similar
properties.
Why are there two rows
detached at the bottom?
The periodic table skips from 56 – 72 because the inner transition metals have
been cut out. The periodic table shown above does fit on a single piece of paper,
however the boxes are too small to write the element names in them.
Why do some symbols not align
with the name?
• These elements symbols come from their
Latin names.
