Quarter 1 Vocabulary Words & Definitions/Memorize for quizzes & matching test which
will take place during 1st quarter.

quarter note ( ) = equals one beat

3. Barline = those vertical lines that go through the staff to separate them into
measures.
4. Measure=The space between the barlines upon which music is written.
5. Time Signature=(sometimes called a meter signature) is the set of numbers at the
beginning of a piece of music. (Ex. ¾ , 4/4, 6/4, 2/4, etc.)
4= top number indicates the number of beats per measure. (4 = 4
beats per measure
4= bottom number indicates the kind of note that receives one beat.
(4 = quarter note gets one beat)
6. Staff=a series of five horizontal lines and four spaces on which notes
are written.
7. Pitch=Notes are placed on staff to indicate pitch, or how high or low
each note sounds.
8. Clef=the symbol at the beginning of the staff that indicates which
lines and spaces represent which notes.
9. Treble = A clef that generally indicates notes that sound higher that
Middle “C” ( )
10. Bass=a clef that generally indicates notes that sound lower than
middle “C”. ( )
11. Grand Staff=a staff created when 2 staves are joined together
12. Scale=a group of pitches which are sung or played in succession and
are based on a particular home tone or keynote.
13. Key= In a scale, the key is determined by its home tone, or keynote.

21. Double Bar Line=A Set of two Barlines that indicate the end of a
piece of music. Usually accompanied by the word, Fine (FEE-nay)
22. Half step= The smallest distance between 2 notes.
23. Whole Step= The combination of 2 half steps side by side.
24. Major Scale= A scale that has do as it’s home tone, or keynote. It is
made up of a specific arrangement of whole steps and help steps n
the following order:
