Job Description
Role:
Head of Communications
Reporting to:
Chief Operating Officer
Hours/Location:
Norwich, 37.5 per week
Salary:
circa £30k
Role Purpose:
Responsibility for the Charity’s Communications and Press strategy,
delivery and day to day activities; Lead the Communications team;
enhance the Charity’s reputation and influence; ensure the Charity
achieves its ambitions to inform, educate and campaign; ensure Beat
branding is consistent and embedded.

Work with COO to develop and deliver communications strategy across the entire
spectrum of communications disciplines including: media and public relations, celebrity
management, internal communictions, brand consistency, advertising, marketing, new
media and production of materials
Increase the organisation’s profile across media, and with influencers and organisations
Develop/execute media strategy across all media
Responsible for all media and PR aspects
Support the charity’s fundraising, services, education and public affairs activities
Writing releases, articles and statements
Lead on copy-writing and production of marketing materials and key publications
including Annual Review
Implement and expand social media strategy
Develop relationships with target media representatives
Oversee the management of a case study database
Ensure staff are well briefed on key communications issues
Prepare and monitor annual communications budget
Manage the communications and media team members, and media volunteers
Develop key messages, lead on creating and maintaining appropriate and consistent
language and terminology across all media
Report on and analyse all aspects of communications
Act as a spokesperson when necessary
Participate in cross-functional projects
Keep up to date on best practice within the charity sector generally and particularly
changes to communications innovation, legislation and codes of practice
Develop effective internal and external customer relationships
Take an active part in the charity’s external events
Enhance communications with colleagues and develop an understanding of the charity's
work and needs of its users
The charity’s communications and events agenda may require the postholder to work unsocial
hours.
This list is not exhaustive and the postholder may be required to undertake other reasonable
tasks.
Person Specification Head of Communications
Qualifications:
 A degree or other relevant qualification and/or membership of a professional body (e.g. CIPR,
CIM).
Essential Skills and Knowledge:
 Demonstrable aptitude for leading a corporate communications function in a complex
organisation.
 Track record of developing and delivering communications with impact and
demonstrable results.
 Good knowledge of all communications areas including: media, crisis management,
digital, public affairs, engagement, consultation, social marketing, brand and reputation
management, events, developing customer insight and achieving behaviour change.
 Demonstrable ability to set clear direction, develop appropriate strategies and deliver
consistent messages that build integrity and profile.
 An innovator who can challenge the norm, be creative and adaptable, act as a pioneer
for change and develop a high performing team with these skills embedded.
 Ability to build effective relationships and networks and establish credibility across the
Charity, its committees, stakeholders, communities and partners from the public,
private and third sectors.
 Ability to manage tight deadlines and pressures in a fast moving environment, ability to
respond to events and effectively manage and reorganise (sometimes conflicting)
priorities and allocate resources as required.
 Strong role model who demonstrates a personal commitment to high standards of public
service, honesty, integrity and professionalism.
 Skilled in planning short and long term and anticipating priorities in a changing
landscape and predict future service needs.
Desirable Skills and Knowledge:
 A good understanding of the mental health context in either a charity or healthcare
setting and knowledge of the relevant legislation, guidance and codes of practice
governing mental health and charity public relations.
