T
he Nazis used propaganda to bipolarize their society by fueling German nationalism and alienating
Jews. Propaganda films like The Eternal Jew were mandatory viewing for members of the Nazi army and
were used to sway public opinion of Jews.
As you watch the pseudo-documentary, The Eternal Jew, keep a running list of the stereotypes that
are presented and attempt to decipher what the Nazis hoped to accomplish by presenting such stereotypes.
Record the stereotypes you observe while you are watching the film. After the film ends, assess their
intended effect.
Propagandist elements you should pay especially close attention to include:
•
•
•
•
Use of music
Notions of conspiracy
Use of negative diction/connotation
Efforts to bipolarize
STEREOTYPE/LABEL
INTENDED EFFECT
Contemporary Application:
• Identify one form of modern/contemporary propaganda that attempts to label people? How is the
propaganda conveyed? What is its intended effect? What are the consequences of such propaganda?
