Forms of Communication
O Intrapersonal
O Interpersonal
O Group
O Mass
O Public
O All forms, except Intrapersonal,
require physical listening by the
receiver.
What makes a good listener?
•Hearing means being able to
detect sounds
•Listening means getting meaning
from the sounds that are heard
•Effective listening requires concentration
and effort
Hearing
• Physical process; occurs without
our active involvement
• People can be born without or
lose the ability to hear.
• One of the 5 senses.
Listening
• Active choice.
• Paying attention.
• Responding back
• Adults want to know if you are
paying attention, aka listening.
Types of Noise or Interference
• Physical (External) Noise – any sound that prevents
a person from being heard
– Coughing while someone is speaking
• Psychological (Internal) Noise – the thoughts and
feelings that distract you from listening
– Daydreaming about your weekend while the teacher is
explaining a process.
• Semantic Noise – interference caused by words that
trigger strong negative feelings against the speaker
or the content of the message
– Referring to the audience being dumb
Communication barriers
stop COMMUNICATION!
5 types of Communication barriers
1. Attitudinal
– “I really don’t like what we’re talking about here.”
2. Social
– “This person is not one of my friends!”
3. Educational
– “I’m far too smart to listen to this stuff!”
4. Cultural
– “This person’s heritage isn’t like mine at all!”
5. Environmental
– “I’m too hot in this room to even think!” or “There’s
too much noise to concentrate!”

• You can tell more about a person by
what he says about others than you
can by what others say about him.
~Leo Aikman
Perceptions
O Not only affect your Intrapersonal
communication, but strongly influence
all forms of Interpersonal
communication as well.
Two people can see the
same thing, disagree,
and yet both be right.
It’s not logical; it’s
psychological.
Each of us tends to think we see
things as they are, that we are
objective. We see the world, not as it
is, but as we are—or, as we are
conditioned to see it.
Sincere, clearheaded people see
things differently, each looking
through the unique lens of experience.
What do you see?
I cnduo't bvleiee taht I culod aulaclty uesdtannrd

– Henry Ford
Listening Activity
O Label an area in your journal “Listening
Skills Quiz”
O Number 1-11
O Record your answers as Sone reads some
questions and word problems aloud
Nonverbal Communication
O Provides up to 93% of the social meanings of
communication. Receivers weigh behaviors
against words.
O Broken down, communication is
O 7% verbal (the actual words)
O 38% vocal (volume, pitch, rhythm, etc)
O 55% body movements (mostly facial expressions)
O Paying attention to nonverbal clues, cues, is
mostly a subconscious part of listening.
O There are 2 basic effects of nonverbal cues:
O Emphasis
O Contradiction
Emphasis
O Emphasize meanings through changing
O Volume
O Stressing certain words
O Using Gestures
O Example
O You are late.
O You are late.
O You are late.
Contradiction
O When nonverbal clues do not match the
words spoken, they are like warning flags.
O They can mean:
O deception
O Uncertainty
O Confusion
O Hidden Motive
Aspects of Vocalization
O Rate – how fast or slow you speak
O Pitch – the highness or lowness of your voice
O Volume – the loudness or softness of your voice
