Artistic Expression – Music that is
created or performed to express the individual’s
feelings.

Ceremonial – Music created or performed
for a ceremony.
 Ex.- Weddings, Graduations, etc.
Purposes of Music
Recreational – Music that is created or
performed for fun.
 Ex. – radio, CD’s, etc.
Baroque Time Period
 Important Composer – Bach
 Bach created the Fugue a series of repetitious phrases.
Classical Time Period
 Important composers- Haydn, Mozart composed in a
very similar style.
 Symphony- Four movement work.
 1, Fast exciting work
 2, Slow, Lyrical Movement
 3, Dance like Movement
 4, Allegro (Fast)
Romantic Time Period
 Important Composers- Beethoven
 Overture- musical piece that introduces a ballet or an
opera.
Modern Time Period
 Important Composers – Debussy and Ravel
 Debussy – Impressionist composer
 Ravel- experimented with dynamics in his music,
making one piece fit just one dynamic.
 Ex: Crescendo, Mezzo Piano
Jazz
 Jazz appeared in the Modern time period. Born from
the work songs and spirituals of the slaves.
 Jazz helped to spawn rock and roll, R & B, and Rap.
