Fanfare for the Common Man - Aaron Copland
 Dates: 1900 – 1990. American composer, teacher, writer and conductor.
 Composed in 1942 for the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra
 Inspired by a famous speech made by Vice President Henry A. Wallace.
Watermelon Man – Herbie Hancock
 Dates: Born April 12, 1940. American composer, pianist, bandleader and
actor.
 Watermelon Man is a “Jazz Standard”, or a song that every jazz musician
knows and plays.
 Just a great tune you should know.
In The Air Tonight – Phil Collins
 Dates: January 30th, 1951. English singer, songwriter, instrumentalist, record
producer and actor.
 Released in 1981, became huge hit after it was used in the TV show Miami
Vice.
 Song was written to express anger and frustration, has no real “meaning”.
All My Days – Alexi Murdoch
 Dates: December 1973. British musician and songwriter.
 Has a cool folk vibe with a modern feel.
 “Folk Music” is defined as older music usually passed down one musician to
another, not written.
Elgar: Cello Concerto in E Major – Edward Elgar
 Dates: 1857-1934. English composer.
 Regarded as a typical English composer even though all of his influences are
from continental Europe.
 “Cello Concerto” means the song was written for a Solo Cello and orchestra
accompaniment.
The Power of Love – Huey Lewis & The News
 Dates: Formed in early 1980’s based in San Francisco California.
 “The Power of Love” was featured in the Movie “Back to the Future” and was
their biggest hit.
 Just a great rock / pop / jazz band. Had horns (sax, trumpet, trombone) and
a solid rhythm section.
