ARIZONA-SONORA DESERT MUSEUM PLANT CARE INFORMATION Queen Victoria Agave Agave victoriae-reginae DESCRIPTION: Queen Victoria Agave is one of the most striking century plant species in cultivation. It is very slow growing but a tough and beautiful plant. Rosettes grow to 18" or so in diameter and height. The dense, compact habit and beautiful white markings on both sides of the leaves make this a highly desirable ornamental. It is slow growing, taking many years to reach flowering size. The flowers are reddish-purple, and are densely packed on an unbranched spike that can reach 15 feet. It is very easy to grow with a few pest problems. Agave victoriae-reginae is endemic to the arid lower elevations of the Sierra Madre Oriental Mountains in northeastern Mexico. RECOMMENDED USE: Queen Victoria Agave is a very versatile plant. Its compact size and ornamental appeal make it an ideal candidate for decorative containers. In the ground, it looks great planted in cactus and succulent gardens, nestled among large boulders, or incorporated into raised planters. Avoid planting it too close to large shrubs that could obscure its beauty. CULTURE: Hardiness: This Agave is hardy to at least 10ºF and possibly lower. Sun tolerance: Be sure to plant it in full sun Watering and feeding: It is very drought tolerant and develops the tightest form when watered sparingly. Queen Victoria Agave does not need to be watered much in the winter. Soil requirements: Well-drained soil. Pruning: The non-offsetting forms do not require any maintenance, but the pups of the offsetting forms should be thinned periodically.
