Technological and Cultural Transfers
section 3.2 ,II
Interregional contacts and conflicts between states and empires encouraged signifigant
technological and cultural transfers.
For example:
Between Tang China and the Abbasids- the Tang Dynasty was famous for the impeccable technology.
They were excellent at keeping time. They also had gunpowder, which is something most countries didn’t
have. They also found a way to print which allowed them to spread literature and taught people how to
read. Because of that advancement they were allowed to develop their medicine, which was second to
none compared to the rest of the world
Across the Mongol Empire- Technological and cultural transfers in the Mongol Empire took place along
the Silk Road. When the Mongols grew their empire the Silk Road fell under their control. This allowed
more trade to come in and out of the region. Many luxury items were traded within the Mongol empire.
During the Crusades- Because of the violent bloody nature of the Crusades, they brought about
all new technology for war machinery. Not only did it sprout new war material, but it also leads the
way for new war tactics.
Islamic States: A type of government in which the focal point of the government is Islamic law. They are lead
by Caliphs, who are the “successor” of Muhammad.
-
The Abbasid Empire is a good example of an Islamic State because it the basis for all government and laws
were based on Islamic religion.
It arose after the collapse of the Umayyad dynasty
They were avid about the spread of Islam, even though they gave freedom to those who were not Muslim
that live in the empire.

The Chinese brought Buddhism to Japan
Before Chinese influence, Japan lacked a strong central government. From AD 593 to 622, the Japanese
Prince Shotoku created a Constitution and began transitioning to a government that more closely imitated
China's.
Not only did China bring Buddhism to Japan, they brought Confucianism as well. From there Japan merged
the two religions creating what is now called Neo-Confucianism.
