Bologna, Italy With a population of 385,000 (80 thousand of which are students), Bologna is the capital of the Emilia-Romagna region. It is the most important city of northern Italy between Florence and Milan, a central train and plane hub known for its great university and lively student life. Dating back to the Etruscans in the 6th century B.C., it retains much of the flavor of its Roman and medieval past. Bologna is famous for its cuisine and rich cultural life. The extensive town center, characterized by miles of attractive covered walkways is one of the best-preserved in Europe. A significant portion of its population consists of away-from-home university students. The University The Università degli Studi di Bologna, founded in 1088, is the oldest continuing institution of higher learning in Europe and possibly the world. Among its alumni are Thomas Aquinas, Copernicus, the scientists Marconi (Nobel for inventing wireless telegraph), Malpighi, father of microsurgical anatomy, Robert Jarvik (developer of the J-artificial heart), some of Italy's most famous writers such as Dante, Petrarch and Torquato Tasso, fashion entrepreneurs such as Armani and Della Valle, film directors any many others.
