Help Wanted Ad for Cell Organelles Title: Help Wanted Objectives: -Students will be able to name the parts of the cell. -Students will be able to demonstrate knowledge of the parts of a cell in reference to cell functions. -Students will be able to apply their knowledge of the cell and the cell parts to a real world situation. Materials: Help wanted advertisements from newspaper. Show on Projector to the entire class. White paper Markers, map pencils Or a computer with microsoft publisher, PPT or other similar programs Procedure: This lesson will need to follow notes and/or lecture about the parts of the cell. 1. Research at least 5 help wanted ads. 2. Study the 5 ads. List everything they have in common: 3. When you have a completed list, call on each group to share an item from their list. You should be able to complete a class list of what all help wanted ads have in common. Items should include: list of qualifications, list of responsibilities, list of benefits, contact (phone number or address) and may include such things as: they all have borders, they all are 4 sided, they all are in English, they are all in black and white, etc. 4. You will now combine and apply their knowledge of the cell parts and their newlygained knowledge of help wanted ads. You will create a parts wanted ad for a cell that is looking for a specific organelle. You will be allowed to pick your organelle by drawing them out of a hat. 5. Work through one example: "Looking for a great opportunity to lead? Do you enjoy making decisions for others? Is guidance your strong point? If so, we are seeking to fill a managerial position. We are in need of a control center for a cell. Must be able to operate a cell. Should have solid experience reading and de-coding DNA. Should exhibit strong leadership skills. Benefits include: placement in low-stress arm cells, long life guaranteed...you don't die; you just divide and multiply! If interested contact The Body at 817-8WE-CELL." 6. Remind students that they shouldn't directly list the name of the organelle; instead make the reader figure it out from the clues given. 7. Go over product descriptor (see evaluation rubric). 8. Allow students to work the remainder of that class period and one more on the ad. They can create it on paper or electronically at a computer using PowerPoint, any online tool such as Google Docs, or a word processing program. 9. At the beginning of the next day Place one at a time on the opaque projector. If done electronically, share on an LCD projector or --even better- interactive whiteboard. Have other groups guess the identity of the organelle needed. Discuss the clues that were given. 10. Grade ads using product descriptor. 11. As a further assessment tool, you can pick the best ad for each organelle that you received throughout the day and compile the ads into a quiz or test. Students have to give the correct organelle needed. If you make sure to pick ones from various periods through the day, they students will not have seen more than two of the ads. Evaluation Rubric: 1. Content (accurate, complete information indicating knowledge of part and its function) - 20 points total. 2. Creativity (fresh and interesting approach) - 10 points total 3. Presentation (advertisement is neat, appealing to the eye and indicates time and effort) - 20 points total.
