Lesson: The Crusades
Enduring Understanding:
Students will understand that religion can cause violence.

Instructional Input:
Anticipatory Set:
• Show class chapter 6 of Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade to show students that
many myths, legends, and lore came out of the Crusades.
• Share with students the story of Friday the 13th.

Activity: Primary Sources (20 minutes)
• Imagine being a knight or peasant living in England in the 11th century. They left their
homes and families and made a long, difficult journey to the Middle East to fight an
unknown civilization, making many sacrifices. Now imagine being a Muslim who
defended what he believes is his land against brutal foreign invaders. Write down your
thoughts/feelings from the point of view of a Crusader and a Muslim.
• Tell students that they are going to read one of three primary sources from this period:
the letter from Pope Urban II encouraging Europeans to begin the Crusades; an
account of a Christian Crusader; and an account from a Muslim who watched his
people massacred after losing the city of Acre.
• Students should summarize the account they read and find three excerpts that best
illustrate the Christian or Muslim point of view.
Movie: The First Crusade (20 minutes)
• Watch segment of the movie about the First Crusade (1:14 - end). Students should
answer the following questions in their journals:
• What happened when the crusaders arrived in Jerusalem?
• What was the outcome of the First Crusade?
Discussion: Impact of the Crusades (20 minutes)
• Discuss with the students the outcomes of the second and third Crusades
• Discuss Saladin
• Discuss the impact of the Crusades
Assess Knowledge:
• What was the outcome of the First Crusade?
• What was the outcome of the Second Crusade?
• What was the outcome of the Third Crusade?
• What was Saladin’s legacy?
• What impact did the Crusades have on Arab society?
