Atomic Math
Atomic Math
• We can determine the amount protons,
neutrons, and electrons in an atom given the
atom’s atomic number and atomic mass.
• Things to remember:
– The atomic number represents the number of
protons in an atom.
– The atomic mass only measures the nucleus.
– Unreacted atoms should be neutral, meaning they
should have the same number of protons and
electrons.
Atomic Math Formulas
• 1. The number of protons = atomic number =
the number of electrons.
• 2. Atomic mass (mass number) = number of
protons + number of neutrons
• 3. Atomic mass – number of protons = number
of neutrons
What to look for on Periodic table?
Atomic Math
• Example Problems:
• How many neutrons can be found in an atom
with 8 protons and a mass number of 16?
• An atom has an atomic number of 15 and a
mass number of 32, how many protons,
neutrons, and electrons does it have?
