Atomic Math Atomic Math • We can determine the amount protons, neutrons, and electrons in an atom given the atom’s atomic number and atomic mass. • Things to remember: – The atomic number represents the number of protons in an atom. – The atomic mass only measures the nucleus. – Unreacted atoms should be neutral, meaning they should have the same number of protons and electrons. Atomic Math Formulas • 1. The number of protons = atomic number = the number of electrons. • 2. Atomic mass (mass number) = number of protons + number of neutrons • 3. Atomic mass – number of protons = number of neutrons What to look for on Periodic table? Atomic Math • Example Problems: • How many neutrons can be found in an atom with 8 protons and a mass number of 16? • An atom has an atomic number of 15 and a mass number of 32, how many protons, neutrons, and electrons does it have?
