Digestive System
Excretory System
What is the digestive system?
What is the Excretory System?
• Digestive System: The process where food is turned into fuel
throughout the body so it can function (ALSO KNOWN AS
ENERGY SYSTEM).
• Excretory System: The process where waste leaves the body
(ALSO KNOWN AS WASTE SYSTEM)
Where does digestion
start??
Process of digestion
• Step 1 Begins in the mouth when you chew food
• Step 2 Saliva starts to break down food
• Step 3 Food gets swallowed and moves down the throat
• Step 4 Travels down the esophagus toward the stomach
• Step 5 The stomach releases an acid (digestive juices) to break
down food even more
• Step 6 Food gets absorbed by the small intestine for further
digestion (This is when the nutrients make it to the blood stream for
energy)
• Step 7 Food that cannot be absorbed travels to colon for waste
KEY TERMS
• Salivary Glands: Produce saliva for initial breakdown of food
• Esophagus: Tube that connects the mouth to the stomach
• Stomach: Muscular organ that provides acid to break down food
• Liver: Helps digest fat
• Gallbladder: Stores digestive Juices
• Pancreas: Produces digestive enzymes
• Small Intestine: Digestion takes place here (food turned into energy)
• Colon: Collects waste from food that wasn’t absorbed by small
intestine
Why are the digestive & excretory
systems important?
• They both work together
• Food that doesn’t get digested
• Travels to the colon
• When colon is full, messages are sent to muscle to push
the waste out (GOING NUMBER 2)
• Kidneys have a similar function
• Removes excess water from blood which is stored in the
bladder and turns to urine. When bladder is full, messages
are sent (GOING NUMBER 1)
Methods to keep digestive & excretory system
healthy…
•Maintain healthy diet
•Eat meals on a regular basis
•Chew food slowly
•STAY HYDRATED
Worksheet
•Either work alone or with ONE partner
