What is IMPERIALISM
Imperialism-the actions used
by 1 nation to exercise political
or economic control over a
smaller or weaker nation.
*In other words, being a bully!!!
Who do the bullies muscle?
• The imperialistic nations (the
bullies) muscle the weaker
nations (the protectorates).
Protectorate=a country that is
technically independent but is
actually under the control of
another country.
***The senior bully & lil’ freshman**
How do you become a imperial
power?
*Build a very strong military
*Have a way of getting your military
all over the world
*****NAVY******
*************Even better, a very fast
navy, faster than anyone else!!!!!!
Wind powered
Strong & fast navy
• In the 1850s, the United States
passed Britain in becoming
fastest, strongest navy.
• How did they do it????
*STEAM POWER took over for
mother nature powered ships
(wind & sails)
Steam ships
Commodore Perry

Use your navy for 2 things?
1.Protection = strong navy keeps
enemies from invading us.
2.Economy = use the navy to
explore and find regions that will
help our economy grow through
trade and production.
Imperialism
• Being imperialistic then is using
the navy to exert our will on
weaker countries.
• 2 choices for the weaker nation:
be a friend or foe, either way
America will still get what we want
(NAVY, STEAM, BIG GUNS)
Peaceful imperialism
• Use the navy and other
Americans to convince nations to
be like us, and listen to us, in
exchange for protection and $$$.
• Trade, production of goods
(products)
Less peaceful imperialism
• If necessary, use the force of the
navy to exert our will by replacing
un-willing leaders with more
cooperative one’s.
• “Listen to us or I’ll blow you
up!!!!!!!!”
