BHAVAS (Houses) (Continued)
Energy Flow Through Odd Houses
The odd houses in an astrology reveals the flow of masculine life force into the world. These
are the Dharma and Kama houses. The expressed masculine energy through each triplicity
(Self, Other, Universal) begins with a Dharma House then moves to a Kama house. In this
way masculine energy is seen to flow from a place of right intention toward a point of
happiness and fulfillment.
The physical body and its inherent truth and autonomy (first house) wants enjoyment,
stimulation and power (third house).
These stimulating activities open us up to certain new experiences that we will want to grow
and develop creatively through love and devotion and with other people (fifth house).
This creativity and expansion leads us into relationships with people. We must learn to
balance our hearts desire with the desires of another.
Relationship compromise expands our vision beyond the personal, leading to a universal selfvision based on religion, faith and things we cannot measure through our own intellect or
accomplish for our own power (ninth house). The awareness of a higher common universal
power leads to the desire to merge our separate identity with our universal identity (11th
house).
5th House
“Yantra (amulet), Mantra, knowledge and also intelligence, continuance, children and fall from royalty
are seen from the child house.”
Traits: Children and all creative expressions, intelligence, education, speculation, romance, past life
credit, spiritual practices, ability to give birth to our ideas
Anchoring Process: The expansive, creative power of love. Each of us is unique and will expand
creatively in different ways. Through the function of our unique nature we can have children, become
educated, do spiritual practices and develop the discrimination to discern the real from the unreal. As a
Dharmic house the 5th house shows our desire to evolve creatively to fulfill our destiny.
Karaka: Jupiter
The fifth house shows the things we love the most. For many of us that means our children and the
things we create based on the love we have for them. The pursuit and interaction of fifth house
matters directly follows the level of peace in our heart and capacity for happiness (fourth house). As
the second dharma house it shows the power of true love to expand us and teach us that we are more
than just an individual. The the third house interests we explore becomes spiritual knowledge in the
fifth house. Any subject we explore authentically through devotion leads to the source of all
knowledge, the universal being itself.
Anchoring Process:
“From material creativity through wealth and children to emotional
creativity through romance or artistic pursuits to spiritual creativity,
leading to discrimination and intelligence is the anchoring process of the
fifth house.”
6th House
“Maternal uncle, enemies, wounds and such, and also the step-mother are considered from the
sixth Bhava.
Traits: Health and disease, immune system, work and service, foreigners, Karma Yoga, effort, wild
animals, our capacity to do hard labor, vanquish our enemies and overcome obstacles
Anchoring Principle: The drudgery of life and what we must do to maintain the things we want is the
main principle of the sixth house. Managing our daily routines and sacrificing our momentary
happiness for something more worthwhile is the deeper lesson. As the 2nd Artha house, it shows the
work and drudgery of material life – and others we must compete with or serve. The highest aim of the
6th house and highest road to improvement is Karma Yoga, selfless service.
Karakas: Mars, Saturn
The love and creativity of the fifth house produces many things that we want. Yet, those things require
our attention and maintenance day to day. The child we produce in the fifth house brings a lot of work
that we must do in the sixth house. Difficulties happen in the sixth house once we start to resent the
work we must do in order to maintain the things we have. Those resentments will produce strong
opinions, likes and dislikes, etc. It is then we start to make enemies, accumulate debts, health
problems, etc. There is also a lot of attachment with sixth house activities because they protect us,
especially our physical health. It is a house of unpleasantness, attachment and sacrifice.
Anchoring Process:
“From the neglect of or attachment to our daily physical routines to
struggling and battling against others and the hard work we must do for the
things we want to a dignified resignation to serve the higher causes in our
life is the anchoring process of the sixth house.”
7th House
“Wife, distant journey, trade, lost sight and death of one’s own body are looked at from the wife
Bhava .”
Traits: Long term romantic relationships, general relations with others, business associates. As
opposite the ascendant, it shows to what we are most drawn and the most challenged to learn.
Anchoring Principle: Where we learn to compromise. Marriage partners and business associates are
relationships where we enter into agreements with others. In them we must negotiate and play fairly
and give up some of what we want in order to get something better. Our sense of Self is at its lowest
and our desires are high in this second Kama house, thus we learn the value of compromise through
the 7th house.
Karaka: Venus
The high desire nature of the seventh house is the glue that keeps us returning time and time again to
face the opposite parts of ourselves represented by a romantic partner, and others in general. The 7th
house is the furthest thing from us astrologically and in many ways represents our least integrated
qualities – the things that feel the most unnatural to us. Coming face-to-face with our opposite, yet
wanting to fulfill our desires creates a bond that is not as easy to break as others. Hence, this is also a
death house, an area where we can expend / waste our energy and have a lot of attachment. Yet few
things feel more rewarding to bring about personal growth as quickly as 7th house matters.
Anchoring Process:
“From self-gratification through sexual desire and stimulation to the push
and pull of self-willed romantic struggles to a detached compromise with
others is the anchoring process of the seventh house.”
8th House
“Longevity, battle, cheats, impassables /strongholds, wealth of the dead and the soul’s course –
what begins and what the wise see fall from the cavity/flaw (Bhava).”
Traits: Transformation through difficulties, things breaking, destruction, dissolution, sex, death, the
occult, dark / hidden side of life, longevity, research, confronting our mortality
Anchoring Principle: Transforming our insecurities into strengths. Parashara calls this Bhava the
cavity or flaw.” It is where we are faced with our mortality and endings, our insecurities in the face of
another and our neediness and fears. The changes we undergo through the 8th house compel us to
look more deeply into the hidden parts of our self and explore life's great mysteries.
Karaka: Saturn
The hidden, shocking, scandalous, deceptive and unexpected events in life come through the eighth
house. It's related to endings, weakness and our deepest fears. It is the second liberation house and
shows where we seek freedom through another person and also freedom from the influence of other
people in general. Yet this is a deeply creative house if we have the courage to face its issues. Eight
house trouble will relieve us of our attachments one way or the other, either painfully or with ease. A
person's deepest mistakes and darkest secrets can be seen here. Ultimately how we handle the 8th
house shows how much we grow in life – how much we mature – and how much our personal
philosophy will be informed by wisdom and insight.
Anchoring Process:
“From avoidance, denial and efforts to control our fears through the
emotional chaos, mistakes and obsessions we have over them, to a measured
and realistic exploration that leads to penetrating wisdom and insight is
the anchoring process of the eigth house.”
Planets as House Rulers
When assessing the influence of houses, we must also assess their rulers and the Karakas. In fact,
the Karaka and the planet that rules the House in an astrology chart will be the main determining
factors about how that energy plays out in our life.
For example, Jupiter (the Karaka) and the planet that rules the fifth house will have more influence
over children, creativity, and fifth House affairs, than a planet that occupies the fifth house. When a
planet occupies a house it influences that area of life, but generally does not determine or produce the
results. The Karaka and the house ruler are what produce results in any area of life.
For example, the moon and the fourth house ruler will produce the nature of the mother a lot more
than the fourth house itself. The fourth house itself will show the nurturing environment and the quality
of peace and happiness. If there is no planet in the fourth house, assess its ruler for that as well.
Understand these ideas to answer the common question “what does it mean when you don't have any
planets in a particular house or sign”. Planets in houses and signs influence that area of life, but the
house rulers and the Karaka are what determines the things produced there.
