THOMAS J. BUTTERY
What is a new writer’s greatest
problem?
FEAR OF THE UNKNOWN
Let’s talk about
SUCCESS
YOUR ATTITUDE
IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN
YOUR APTITUDE.
YOU DON’T PAY
THE PRICE FOR
SUCCESS
YOU ENJOY THE
FRUITS OF
SUCCESS
YOU PAY FOR
FAILURE.
Zig Ziglar
“DO NOT MAKE FRIENDS WITH A HOTTEMPERED PERSON. DO NOT ASSOCIATE WITH
ONE EASILY ANGERED OR YOU WILL LEARN HIS
WAYS AND BECOME LIKE HIM.”
Proverbs 22:24-25
“DON’T ASSOCIATE
AND WORK WITH
NON-PRODUCTIVE
PEERS OR YOU WILL
LEARN THEIR WAYS
AND BECOME LIKE
THEM.”

Four Key Concepts
IT IS SOMETHING YOU NEVER HAD
BEFORE,
SOMETHING THAT WILL ADD TO
YOUR RESPONSIBILITIES, AND
SOMETHING THAT WILL COMPEL
YOU TO SEEK NEW POWERS WITHIN
YOURSELF AND NEW RESOURCES
OUTSIDE.
BELIEF IS THE MOTIVATING
FORCE THAT ENABLES YOU
TO ACHIEVE YOUR GOALS.
THE MAGIC OF BELIEVING
BECOMES A PHRASE AROUND
WHICH
THOUGHTS STEADILY REVOLVE.
Playwright Neil Simon
Don’t listen to those who say, “It’s not done that way.”
Maybe it’s not, but maybe you will. Don’t listen to those
who say, “You’re taking to big a chance.” Michelangelo
would have painted the Sistine floor, and it would surely be
rubbed out by today. Most important, don’t listen when the
little voice of fear inside of you rears its ugly head and
says, “They’re all smarter than you out there. They’re all
more talented, they’re taller, blonder, prettier, luckier, and
have connections. They have a cousin who took out Meryl
Streep’s babysitter…”
I firmly believe that if you
follow a path that interests
you, not to the exclusion of
love, sensitivity, and
cooperation with others, but
with the strength of conviction
that you can move others by
your own efforts, and do not
make success or failure the
criteria by which you live, the
chances are you’ll be a person
worthy of your own respect.
THERE IS A TIME TO
LET THINGS HAPPEN
AND
A TIME TO MAKE
THINGS HAPPEN
Hugh Prather
“Nothing in the world can take
the place of persistence. Talent
will not; nothing is more common
than unsuccessful men with talent. Genius
will not; unrewarded genius is almost a
proverb. Education will not; the world is full
of educated derelicts. Persistence and
determination alone are omnipotent.”
Calvin Coolidge
Edison failed 9,999 times before he succeeded once! But
each failure taught him what would not work, and through
the laborious process of elimination finally was led to the
discovery of something that would work.
How long could you persist in the face of such colossal
failure? Edison is credited with saying “Success is ninetynine percent perspiration and one percent inspiration.”
Bristol notes that when you are working with the power
within, as Edison did, your faith will never falter. You will
continue the struggle against all obstacles and seeming
setbacks in the unshakable conviction that you will
eventually succeed.
Sometimes, failure to attain a selected goal in an
area has lead to unexpected and even greater
rewards in achieving different objectives. For
example, Columbus tried to reach Cathay and the
Indies and discovered America, although he made
three trips without realizing he had discovered a
new continent. However, history records him as a
success, not a failure.
Bristol asserts that successful men and women of
the world never lose sight of their pictures. They
keep on reminding their creative power of what
they desire in life so that it will keep on attracting
everything they need to materialize what they have
pictured.

CONSISTENT ACTION WILL BRING
SUCCESS.
It is important to point out that hard work alone
will not bring success. The world is filled with
people who have worked hard but have little to
show for it. Something more than hard work is
necessary: it is creative thinking and a firm belief
in your ability to execute your ideas. The
successful people in history have succeeded
through their thinking. Their hands were merely
helpers to the brain.

Visualization
What you picture in your mind, if you picture it clearly and
confidently and persistently enough, will eventually come to
pass in your life.
Picture yourself attaining, the power within yourself given these
pictures to work on will bring them into being.
The law of attraction will only bring to you what you picture.
The creative power within must be magnetized by what you
visualize for it to do.
Bristol believes that while
thoughts do create and exercise
control far beyond any limits yet
known to man, they create only
according to their pitch, intensity,
emotional quality, depth of feeling,
or vibratory plane. In other
words, comparable to the
wavelength and wattage of a radio
station, thoughts have a creative
controlling force in the exact ratio
of their constancy, intensity, and
power.
Claude Bristol
DAYDREAMING VS MENTAL PICTURES
A distinction must be made between daydreaming and a
true mental picture, or the proper use of the imagination.
Perhaps a genie will give you a million dollars, but I’ve only
seen a genie on television. Daydreaming, or mere undirected
wishful thing, doesn’t have the power to release the latent
forces within you that will bring you the million dollars.
When you employ your imagination properly you are yourself
doing a thing and you go ahead and do it. It’s the doing the
thing you have pictured to yourself that brings it into actual
existence.

THE PEOPLE WHO ARE SUCCESSFUL ARE THOSE WHO GET UP
AND LOOK FOR THE CIRCUMSTANCES THEY WANT, AND IF
THEY CAN’T FIND THEM, MAKE THEM!
