University of Bristol – Institute for Advanced Studies Workshop Series:
Bristol One Health Consortium
Workshop 1
Date: 4 May 2011, 9.00am – 12.00am
Venue: Engineers’ House, The Promenade, Clifton Down, Bristol, BS8 3NB
The ‘One world, One health’ concept focuses on the current and potential
movements of diseases among human, domestic animal and wildlife
populations. Human, animal and ecosystem health are inextricably linked and a
paradigm shift in approaching infectious and non-infectious diseases of humans
and animals is essential to meet the challenges of the 21st century resulting from
globalisation, climate change and population growth. Cooperation and
collaboration between medical, veterinary, public health, environmental and
ecosystem professionals is essential in effective research leading to accelerated
biomedical discovery, enhanced public health efficacy, an expeditiously
expanded scientific knowledge base, and improved medical education and
clinical care. In terms of infectious disease this means improved control of
zoonoses, while in the non-infectious disease area, improved animal models of
human diseases and even human models of animal disease.
The Bristol One Health Consortium will bring together researchers from the
Schools of Veterinary Sciences, Biochemistry, Biological Sciences, Cellular and
Molecular Medicine, Social and Community Medicine, Clinical Sciences, the
Health Protection Agency (Public Health England) and the University of Bath. A
series of One Health workshops supported by the University of Bristol’s Institute
for Advanced Studies will draw together researchers with interests in human
and veterinary medicine, in public health, epidemiology and disease modelling,
and in biological, environmental and ecosystem sciences to focus strengths and
exploit potential synergies in One Health.
