SOL 6.3 Comparing and Ordering Integers, Absolute Value
Comparing Integers:
Think that negative numbers are how much you _________ and positive numbers are
how much you ________. You can also think about money to help you.
When comparing, you use symbols:

greater than

less than

equal to
Examples: (draw a number line if you need to)
-5 ______ 0
-3 ______ -9
7 ______ -1
Create 3 inequalities of your own. Be sure to include positives, negatives, and zero.
Ordering Integers:
1. Temperatures in Colorado vary throughout the year. Order the temperatures below
from least to greatest.
-1°, 75°, 0°, 32°, -5°, -11°
2. Order the following numbers from greatest to least.
5, -7, -2, 1, 9
SOL 6.3 Comparing and Ordering Integers, Absolute Value
Absolute Value:
The _______________________ a number is from ______ on a number line. Absolute
value is represented by two long straight lines (________) and the answer is always a
_______________ number. Absolute value will NEVER have a ______________ sign.
Solve:
|15| =
|-2| =
|-149| =
|2,467| =
Compare: (find the absolute value first!)
|-13| ______ |-4|
|-3| _______ |3|
|37| ______ |-42|
***How to read a problem with absolute value—example |-12|
“The absolute value of negative 12 is 12.”
