Using Variables
Pages 6
Algebra - A language of symbols
(variables, numbers, operations)
Example: 4(x + y)2 = 30
Operations: +, -, X, ÷
Variable – a symbol, usually a letter, that
represents one or more numbers.
Example: x or y
Algebraic expression – a mathematical
phrase that can include numbers,
variables, and operation symbols.
Example: 6 + a
Brainstorm!
Write an algebraic expression for each
phrase.
a. seven more than n
b. the difference of n and 7
c. the product of seven and n
d. the quotient of n and seven
Write an algebraic expression for
each phrase:
1. The quotient of 4.2 and c
2. The difference of t and 15
3. The sum of 5 and x
Now you try:
Define a variable and write an algebraic
expression for each phrase:
a. 9 less than a number
b. The sum of twice a number and 31
c. The product of one half of a number
and one third of the same number
Algebraic Equation – a mathematical
sentence that uses an equal sign.
If the equation is true, then the two
expressions on either side of the equal
sign represent the same value.
In everyday language, the word “is” often
suggests an equal sign.
Track One Media sells all CDs
for $12 each.
Write an equation for the
total cost of a given number
of CDs.
Now you try:
a. Suppose the manager at Track One
Media raises the price of each CD to $15.
Write an equation to find the total cost of
n CDs.
b. Suppose the manager at Track One
Media uses the equation c = 10.99n.
What could this mean?
Reflection (Pick one to write on!)
 Describe how a variable is used in Algebra.
 Explain the difference between an
algebraic expression and equation?
 Name at least two words that mean each
operation.
 Write two different verbal expressions for
X+7.
 Translate four more than k is the product
of 3 and 7.
Review
Five times the sum of two numbers
Four less than half a number
One-third of the product of two
numbers
Ten less than twice her age
Sixteen is a number divided by three
A number decreased by three is 39
Three inches shorter than Taylor
