The Holy Roman Empire was a complex of territories
in central Europe that developed during the Early

Pope Leo III crowned the Frankish king Charlemagne
as the first Holy Roman Emperor, reviving the title
more than three centuries after the fall of ancient

When choosing a new emperor, the German prince-electors first elected one of their peers as the “King
