Rock/Mineral Collection Project 2016 Earth Science Last Name __________________________First Name___________________ Due Date: _____________________________ Goal: To collect, identify, and display rock samples from each of the three types of rocks and to find a minimum of 4 minerals. Objectives: Given the activity to collect rocks & minerals, the student will: 1. Collect and identify at least 2 rock samples of the three rock categories. (6 rocks) -Sedimentary – try for a clastic, organic and/or chemical. -Igneous – try for an intrusive, extrusive and/or porphyry. -Metamorphic – foliated and unfoliated. 2. Collect and identify at least 4 different minerals (6 is maximum for this school collection 3. Label each rock in the collection. With a typed label. See format below: Identified Minerals Mineral Name – Where found – Found by – Unidentified Minerals Mineral name – unknown Luster – Hardness – Streak – Cleavage/Fracture – Where found – Found by - Rocks Rock type – Ig, Sed, Met. Further Classification – intrusive, clastic, etc. Rock name – Where found – Found by – 4. Be sure to organize the samples appropriately with the label beneath each sample. Samples should be placed/glued on a clean thin board or sturdy cardboard. Board/Cardboard no larger than 24”x18”. Clearly organize your collection by rock type and mineral in some manner of your own choosing. 5. Name and period on a label in the lower left corner of the project. Category Complete Identification Labels Organization Size 4 3 2 1 6 rocks, 2 of each type and 4+ minerals. 6 rocks, at least 4 minerals, but not 2 of each type of rock. 10-11 samples correctly and completely identified. All labels complete but not typed. Only 8-9 rocks and minerals. 7 or less rocks and minerals. 6-9 samples correctly and completely identified. Most (9+) labels complete, some may not be typed. Somewhat organized, but not clear, even confusing. Not applicable. 5 or less samples correctly and completely identified. Less than 9 labels complete, many not typed. All samples correctly and completely identified. All labels complete and typed. Clean, clear, obvious organizational system used. Size is appropriate. Organization present, but may not be readily apparent. Not applicable. Not organized. Size limits exceeded. Parents, Please sign below stating that you are aware of this project. Rocks/minerals can be found locally, collected or gifted from family members, friends, neighbors, just about anywhere. Polished rocks are NOT allowed. We’d prefer they not be store bought, no need to spend money. (Unless there is a great sample that you just must have!) Once collected keep the samples at home. Once we learn all the identification techniques, the students will bring in their samples to identify using all of the lab equipment.
