Assignment 3 Understanding the Ethics of My Major (10%)
1
According to Wikipedia (2011), Ethics, also known as moral philosophy, is a branch of
philosophy that addresses questions about morality—that is, concepts such as good and evil,
right and wrong, virtue and vice, justice and crime, etc( para. 1). When someone says that this
thing is ethical or a person has a great deal of ethics, they mean that he is honest, straight, well
behaved, etc. All these characteristics are very important in the work place, therefore a person
should understand the ethics of his major so he can implement them in his work place.
Ethics can be summed in several behaviors as it been mentioned, such as being truthful,
fairness, honest, and respect for others. An example of being truthful is when someone give a
person his car and then he has accident because of his mistake, the car’s owner will ask him
whose mistake is it, and to be truthful he will answer that it was his mistake even though that
might risk the chance that he will let him drive his car in the future. An example of being fair is
when a person deals with his own children, if he gave his son a toy, he should do the same to
his other son, even if he kissed one of them, to be fair he should kiss the other son as well. An
example how the other should be respected is when you deal with manager or when you deal
even with the cleaner, a person should treat them the same way, this might be more of being
humble, but after all being humble when deal with others is respecting them.
Ethics is important in any major, it might not be that important in the Management
Information System major because the person is dealing with computers and programs most of
the time, never the less the MIS employee should be ethical in every way, a MIS employee
might not do any unethical behaviors, but his company can using his department, without
talking about a particular company, but in general computer abuse is the commission of acts
2
involving a computer that may not be illegal but that are considered unethical.
There are number of examples of ethical issues that the Management Information
System employee might face in his work place, for example a manager will ask him to chick his
colleague computer for some information without the permission from his colleague that he
trusted him by giving him the password to login to his computer just for emergencies, this act if
the employee has done it will consider unethical behavior. Another example is a friend will ask
the MIS employee to remove the hold which is on his name for whatever reason so he can
access to his account, if the employee does this, it will consider unethical behavior as well.
The report was about ethics, its definition, several ethical behavior was mentioned with
their examples. And the report demonstrate how ethics is important in the work place in
general, and in the Management Information System major in particular. In short, there are so
many opportunities for a person to use unethical behaviors in life in general and in the work
place in particular, it’s hard not fall in these behaviors and that’s why an ethical person is
unique and well appreciated!
