Vocabulary beta carotene – boosts the immune system and may prevent certain types of cancer. cholesterol – a waxy, fat-like substance found in every cell that is used to help digest fats, strengthen cell membranes and make hormones. Too much cholesterol in the blood settles out on artery walls and may cause arteries to close or blood clots that cause heart attacks and strokes. generic – usually a little-known company that has “copied” the recipe developed by another company. This usually allows them to sell it more cheaply than the original. NOTE: The recipe cannot be exactly the same, and sometimes non-active ingredients in things like medicine can cause problems for some people. monosaturated fat – fats that are liquid at room temperature. Help decrease high blood cholesterol levels if part of a low-fat diet. name brand – a well-known brand that has usually developed the “recipe” for the product by themselves. saturated fats – contain many hydrogen and single bonds. Easily absorbed into the blood stream. Have been linked to heart disease transfat – produced when vegetable oil is hydrogenated or partially hydrogenated to allow it to be formed into a solid. This is the newest culprit linked to heart disease. unsaturated fats – do not contain many hydrogen because of double bonding between carbons. Has been linked to some types of cancer if antioxidants are not present to balance this out. vitamin A – helps maintain surface linings of the eyes, and respiratory, urinary and intestinal tracts. Helps keep skin and mucous membranes healthy. Also helps regulate the immune system.
