W.C.I. Physical Education 2010-2011 Expectations and Grading Policies P.E. Teachers: Mrs. Kern ext. 8711 Mr. Philips ext. 8721 Mr. Loving ext. 8731 Mrs. Boyko ext. 8407 Mrs. Hoy ext. 8207 Class Expectations: 1) Be on time. Students must be dressed and on their numbers four minutes after the period begins. 2) Dress Daily. Complete, and proper, P.E. uniform is required to avoid a dress cut. Uniforms will be checked each Monday to monitor if they were washed over the weekend. An unwashed uniform will result in a dress cut. 3) Participate diligently. Students are expected to put forth their best effort throughout the entire period (daily exercises, running, and activities). 4) Demonstrate good sportsmanship. Participate and compete with a positive attitude. 5) Respect. Students are expected to respect themselves, teachers, classmates, locker rooms, and equipment. 6) Learn and have fun! Grading: P.E. grades are determined on how well a student performs in the following three categories: 1) Participation and Effort. This category accounts for 70% of a student’s grade. Behavior and conduct are also included in this category. 2) Miles. This category accounts for 15% of a student’s grade. 3) Written Work. This category accounts for 15% of a student’s grade and includes the end of quarter tests, as well as any written work completed during the health unit. Every student has the opportunity to earn the maximum daily points (6 points per day) in P.E. When the following behaviors are exhibited, the maximum number of daily points will not be earned: Dress cut (-6 points) Tardy for roll call (-3) Not participating or behaving inappropriately during the daily exercises (-3 to -6) Not running (-3 to -6) Not participating during activities (-3 to -6) Poor Sportsmanship (-3) Gum/Food (-3) Foul language (-3 to -6) Cutting any part of class (-15 + referral) Dress Cuts: A student will receive a dress cut if they do not have a complete P.E. uniform (both shirt and shorts). The P.E. uniform may not be ripped, torn, written on (except for name in proper area), or changed in any way. A dress cut will also be given to any student who wears improper shoes (i.e. sandals, boots, or non-athletic footwear) or jewelry of any kind (including watches and non-stud earrings). Each dress cut subtracts 6 points from a student’s grade (one full day of participation points). If a student receives more than two dress cuts, the following penalties will apply in addition to losing P.E. points: - 3rd dress cut = Student’s grade is dropped one full letter grade. - 4th dress cut = Teacher’s discretion (possible lunch or after school detention). - 5th dress cut = Discipline referral will be given to the vice principal. - 6th dress cut = Student will be given a Friday School. **Dress cuts are erased at the end of each quarter. Excused Absences: Students who have a written excuse note for illness, or a short-term injury, will be given the opportunity to earn their points for the day by completing a written assignment and MUST DRESS (unless excused by a doctor). Excused students must report to their roll call number with their note before getting their written assignment. An excused note written by a parent/guardian is only valid for a maximum of 3 days, absences longer than 3 days require a doctor’s note. REMEMBER: No note = student MUST participate!! Activities: Some of the activities we will be doing throughout the year include; flag football, volleyball, hockey, soccer, basketball, line dancing, ultimate frisbee, pigball, selfdefense, physical fitness, track and field, gymnastics (girls), and wrestling (boys). Each class will also be doing a health unit that will take place during the 1st semester. Miles: Each student will be required to run a mile every week. If a student misses a mile due to being absent or excused, he/she must make up the mile on an assigned mile make-up day (teachers will notify the students of the make-up days). Failure to make-up a missed mile will result in the student receiving a zero for that mile. Lockers: Each student will receive their own locker to keep their P.E. uniform in. The individual lockers have built-in locks, but students will need to buy their own combination or pad lock if they wish to lock their backpacks up each period in the day lockers. Extra Credit There will be two extra credit opportunities per quarter worth up to 6 points each. The extra credit can be earned through doing a written report about an athlete, or a favorite sport (must be 1 page typed, or 2 pages written). The report must be in the student’s own words (not copied from a book or the internet) or no credit will be given. Students can also earn extra credit by participating in an organized extra-curricular activity (i.e. cancer walks, marathon runs, not basic team or individual sports).
