Internal Structure of the Heart Directions: 1. Read the statements 2. Use the statements to help you label & color the diagram A. I. B. H. C. D G. E F. Statements for Labeling 1. Inside the heart are 4 spaces or chambers. Each chamber in the tip half of the heart is called an atrium. The plural form is atria. Arrows D and H point to the atria. Label arrow D “left atrium” and label arrow H “right atrium.” 2. The two chambers directly below the atria are called ventricles. Arrows E and G point to the ventricles. Label arrow E “left ventricle” and label arrow G “right ventricle”. 3. Two large veins bring deoxygenated blood to the right atrium. The large vein on the top end of the heart is called the superior vena cava. Label arrow I “superior vena cava.” The large vein on the bottom is called the inferior vena cava. Label arrow F “inferior vena cava”. 4. A large artery sends deoxygenated blood from the right ventricle to the lungs. This artery is called the pulmonary artery. Arrow B points to the pulmonary artery. Label arrow B “pulmonary artery.” 5. Two small veins bring oxygen-rich blood from the lungs to the left atrium. These veins are called pulmonary veins. Labe arrow C “pulmonary veins.” 6. Oxygen-rich blood leaves the left ventricle through a large artery called the aorta. The aorta is the largest artery in your body. Arrow A points to the aorta. Label arrow A “aorta.” Statements for Coloring 1. Blood in the right ventricle is loaded with carbon dioxide. Color it blue. 2. Find the pulmonary arteries – they lead to the lungs. Color them blue. 3. Blood in the left atrium receives oxygen-rich blood from the lungs via the pulmonary veins. Color the left atrium red and the pulmonary veins red. 4. The left ventricle is the largest heart chamber and the strongest pump. It discharges blood into the aorta through the aortic valve. From the aorta, all body tissue receives oxygen-rich blood. Color the left ventricle and the aorta red. 5. Blood flow through the superior vena cava and the inferior vena cava into the right atrium. Color all of them blue.
