The
Circulatory
System
Blood is composed (made up) of:
- Plasma
- Red Blood cells
- White Blood cells
- Platelets
Plasma transports heat and
chemicals( like food, hormones and
carbon dioxide)
Red blood cells carry oxygen around
the body
White blood cells fight disease
Platelets help the form blood clots
The three types of blood vessels are:
• Arteries
• Veins
• Capillaries
Arteries
• Carry blood away
from the heart
• Blood is under high
pressure
• Walls of arteries are
very thick and strong
Veins
• Carry blood to the heart
• The blood pressure is low
• Veins have thinner and
weaker walls than
arteries
• They have valves to stop
the blood flowing
backwards
Capillaries
• Tiny blood vessels that have very thin
walls, which allows materials to pass in
and out of them
How blood flows around the body

The heart is
divided into
FOUR
chambers
AORTA
The heart
has four
major blood
vessels
OXYGEN in the
lungs collected by
the blood
The oxygenated
blood travels along
the pulmonary vein
to the LEFT ATRIUM
pulmonary vein
AORTA
The aorta
carries
oxygenated
blood to all
parts of the
body
Inside every cell
oxygen and food
are used in
RESPIRATION
to produce
WATER + CARBON DIOXIDE +
VENA CAVA
The vena cava
sends
deoxygenated
blood back to
the heart
The
PULMONARY
ARTERY
PULMONARY ARTERY
Carries
deoxygenated
blood back to
the lungs again!
Pulmonary artery
(brings blood to the lungs)
Vena cava
(brings blood
from the body)
Aorta
(brings blood to the body)
Pulmonary vein
(brings blood
from the lungs)
Does exercise effect your pulse rate?
Beats per minute
Minute 1
Minute 2
Minute 3
AVERAGE
Pulse per minute after 2
minutes of running on the
spot
Conclusions – what did you learn from your results ? Can
you try to explain why this happened?
The functions of the blood
(1) Blood transports many substances
around our body – oxygen, food, waste
materials, hormones
The functions of the blood
(2) Our blood helps us to defend against
disease by destroying harmful bacteria
and viruses.
The temperature of the blood
(3)Our blood keeps our body temperature
constant, at 37OC.
This changes when you are sick
